Some years ago I was invited to attend an ‘Executive Stretch’ training weekend. It was essentially a recruitment exercise for the Territorial Army. Those attending would take part in a series of exercises much like those undertaken by Reservists as part of their training, giving participants first-hand experience of what it would be like to be in the TA. I can’t say that I relished the prospect. I had never before given any thought to joining the army but at the time I was in the England rugby squad and my employer thought I could easily handle the physical demands that would be made of me. So, joined by a colleague, I duly went along to Chelsea barracks.
