Summary of Recent Key Events for East Midlands Employers

Employer Visits to Reserve Forces on Operations Overseas

Employer visits give first-hand experience of the part that Reservists play in British Armed Forces operations overseas.  Employers are able to observe the skills that are learnt while serving with the Reserve Forces.

Afghanistan

In January 2010, Dean Hyde the MD of DnA Group Ltd and George Cowcher the Chief Executive of the Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce both visited Afghanistan.

I was thoroughly impressed with the skill and professionalism of the TA soldiers and saw firsthand the development of skills and attributes that will be of immense benefit to their employers”.

Norway

In March 2010, Paul Maloney, Regional Chairman Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Federation of Small Businesses, and Stephen Kingan, Chief Executive Nexor Ltd, Nottingham both visited the Royal Marines Reserves on winter training exercise in Norway.

The whole trip was thought-provoking and fascinating. In just two days I was able to witness the vast array of skills the Reservists have. Small businesses can gain so much from the skills the Reservists bring back to their civilian job – skills such as self discipline, planning, team building, assertiveness and leadership. I would encourage employers of any size to support the Reserve Forces by offering them employment as it’s very much a win-win situation.”
