What you’ll get
The first thing that will happen when you’re mobilised is that you’ll receive a call-out notice – along with a considerable amount of supporting information. This will include:
- A covering letter giving a short explanation of the mobilisation process
- The official call-out notice itself
- A ‘conditions of service’ document
- A list of clothing and equipment to take
- Information on exemption, deferral and revocation of mobilisation, application conditions
- Information on employment protection of your civilian job
- A form to fill in about pension contributions
- Information on financial assistance and instructions on how to make a claim
- Information on welfare services
- Mobilisation helpline details and a list of contacts
What your employer gets
Shortly after you receive your callout notice, your employer will be sent a comprehensive information pack. This should be sent directly to your employer if their details are up to date on JPA, but if not you may have to hand this to your employer personally. The pack is should answer many of the questions that face employers once an employee has been mobilised so it will include:
- A copy of the official call-out notice
- A letter setting out the date and possible duration of mobilisation
- Details of employers’ statutory rights and obligations
- Details of the statutory rights and obligations of the Reservist
- Information about exemption, deferral and revocation of mobilisation, application conditions
- Details on financial assistance and an application form
- A list of contacts
Discussing the possibility of mobilisation
You may know some months in advance that you are likely to be mobilised. Letting your employer know at this early stage will give them the opportunity to start thinking about how they could cover your absence. They are more likely to be supportive if you give them plenty of notice, and work with them to minimise the impact on their business or organisation, than if you waited, then sprung the news of your mobilisation on them at short notice. Read more about discussing mobilisation with your employer.
Both you and your employer have the right to appeal against the mobilisation once the callout papers have been received, this should be done within 7 days.
