Explaining this course to your employer
Those soldiers seeking to perform the role of Platoon Sergeant must be dynamic leaders and real team players and this two-week course is aimed at developing and testing these qualities to the full.
On successful completion of the Platoon Tactics Course (Platoon Sergeants) candidates will be qualified to perform the role of second in command of a platoon of around 28 soldiers – if necessary in an operational environment such as Afghanistan.
He or she will be able to assume responsibility for the specific needs of the platoon including health and hygiene, welfare, discipline and personnel administration. They must also ensure that the platoon is fully supplied with everything it needs (including equipment, food, water and ammunition), arrange the treatment and evacuation of any casualties and handle any prisoners of war.
What does the training involve?
- At least 12 hours training a day
- Combat fitness test
- Lectures and individual tuition in leadership, tactical planning and communication
- Field exercises
- Simulated military scenarios such as platoon attacks, patrolling, defensive operations and casualty evacuation
- Managing subordinates
- Logistics planning
What would it cost?
According to research endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, if your employer was to pay for training to deliver equivalent employee development it would cost them in the order of £3,750 This only relates to the skills that would be relevant to a civilian workplace - areas such as logistics planning and managing subordinates.
