Explaining this course to your employer

JOTAC is designed for the Army’s ‘junior managers’. Participants will all have passed the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst commissioning course to become officers and have gained significant experience as a commander in young officer roles as a Second Lieutenant and Lieutenant. This is a mandatory training course to prepare officers for promotion to Captain.

It is extremely rigorous and highly intellectually demanding because a Captain’s responsibilities can include assuming second in command of an infantry company of 120 soldiers, commanding a specialist platoon (eg: specialist weapons systems) or acting as a liaison officer with other units and allied forces.

What does the training involve?

  • Tactical planning
  • Data analysis
  • Assessment of resource requirements
  • Resource allocation optimisation
  • Clear communication with those carrying out orders
  • The ability to share knowledge and experience

What would it cost?

According to research endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, if your employer were to pay for training to deliver equivalent employee development it would cost them in the order of £8,275. This only relates to the skills that would be relevant to a civilian workplace - areas such as leadership and management skills.

How does it benefit your employer?

JOTAC also builds the following transferable skills:

  • Managing information
  • Liaising with other stakeholders and advising external agencies
  • Determining and planning human resources and material requirements
  • Managing available resources, including the planning and control of their movement
  • Understanding the importance of the media and conducting media interviews
  • Understanding and interpreting management information systems
  • Analysing a project or mission and producing a post-operational report
