Explaining this course to your employer

The Territorial Army Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Troop Commander Course tests and develops an officer’s ability to lead, motivate and manage personnel. Candidates must already have passed the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst commissioning course to become officers and be highly motivated as well as able to build and inspire a team around them. They must also demonstrate the ability to manage equipment and inventory stores in an operational environment such as Afghanistan, as well as in barracks. Successful students will be able to use complex logistics planning techniques and logistics IT systems. This is a critical role carrying a high level of responsibility and qualifies successful participants to command a troop of approximately 40 soldiers.

What does the training involve?

 The management side of the course covers:

  • Management theories
  • Dealing with misconduct
  • Personnel welfare
  • Interview techniques
  • Writing risk assessments.

The logistics side of the course covers:

  • Planning and directing vehicle road movements
  • Supply and distribution procedures and storage procedures
  • Managing accounts and stock
  • Training on information systems.

What would it cost?

According to research endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, if your employer were to pay for training to deliver equivalent employee development it would cost them in the order of £6,500. This only relates to the skills that would be relevant to a civilian workplace - areas such as leadership and management skills.
