SaBRE - We're all stronger with Reservists

Explaining this course to your employer

Once TA recruits, or ‘Soldiers Under Training’ (SUTs) have passed the nine weekends of initial recruit training at their Regional Training Centre, they go on to attend the Combat Infantryman’s Course (CIC). This is held at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, where the Regular Army infantry recruits are trained.

The course is a two-week intensive residential course which builds on the basic skills they have developed during initial training. It includes two intensive exercises in the field and focuses on shooting skills and fieldcraft. SUTs rely on teamwork, dedication, physical fitness and motivation to get them through this arduous and physically demanding course.

Each SUT is assessed throughout the course and, upon successful completion, becomes a “trained soldier”. After this he will join his chosen infantry battalion and take part in full scale training.

What does the training involve?

  • Developing and maintaining fitness
  • Treating battlefield casualties
  • Operating in a contaminated environment
  • Navigating across country
  • Upholding the ethics of the British Army
  • Living and operating in the field
  • Effective communication
  • Operating and maintaining equipment
  • Personal organisational skills

What would it cost?

According to research endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, if your employer were to pay for training to deliver equivalent employee development it would cost them in the order of £350. This only relates to the skills that would be relevant to a civilian workplace - areas such as problem solving and teamwork.

How does it benefit your employer?

The course also builds the following transferable skills:

  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Organisational awareness and adaptability
  • Health and safety awareness of themselves and others
  • Communication skills
  • Fitness and physical endurance
  • First aid
  • Operating and maintaining equipment safely and effectively
