Explaining this course to your employer

A movement controller is responsible for organising the transportation of troops, ammunition, vehicles and supplies. They help plan routes, organise paperwork and get personnel and cargo ready to be moved by road, rail, sea or air.

The RLC Movement Controller Class 3 course allows Privates who have recently joined the Reserves to start specialising in a particular military trade. It consists of a 15-day intensive residential course at the Logistics Training School in Grantham.

The course provides a route to higher management training and opportunities as supply chain and fleet transport managers. TA Movement Operators can gain civilian-recognised hazardous material (HAZMAT) and International Air Transportation Authority (IATA) Movement of Dangerous Goods qualifications as well as their Category C driving licence.

What does the training involve?

  • Movements theory
  • Methods of tracking cargo on logistics management information systems
  • Documentation and checking of personnel and equipment for military movement
  • Preparing passengers, vehicles and cargo for transport
  • Processing embarkation and discharge at terminals
  • Scenario-based exercises at air, sea and rail movement centres to allow them to put their logistics theory into practice.

What would it cost?

According to research endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute, if your employer was to pay for training to deliver equivalent employee development it would cost them in the order of £2,750 This only relates to the skills that would be relevant to a civilian workplace - areas such as documentation and logistics management.
